The OFFENDING eye

 Mark 9:47-48

King James Version

47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: 

it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God 

with one eye, 

than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

48 Where their worm dieth not, 

and the fire is not quenched.

Many parts of the Bible can be taken literally.

But there's this particular verse, which cannot be taken literally.

This Bible version explains what "plucking out an offending eye" means:

47 If your eye causes you to stumble and sin, 

throw it out [that is, 

remove yourself from the source of temptation]! 

It would be better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, 

than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

In SUMMARY, "plucking out an offending eye" means:

throw it out [that is, remove yourself from the source of temptation]

What I understand the verse to mean is that if your eye causes you to sin, you leave the scene of the sin.

How you see with your eye is important.

Galatians 5:19-21

19-21 The activities of the lower nature are obvious. Here is a list: sexual immorality, impurity of mind, sensuality, worship of false gods, witchcraft, hatred, quarrelling, jealousy, bad temper, rivalry, factions, party-spirit, envy, drunkenness, orgies and things like that. I solemnly assure you, as I did before, that those who indulge in such things will never inherit God’s kingdom.

19 But when you follow your own wrong inclinations, your lives will produce these evil results: impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, 20 idolatry, spiritism (that is, encouraging the activity of demons), hatred and fighting, jealousy and anger, constant effort to get the best for yourself, complaints and criticisms, the feeling that everyone else is wrong except those in your own little group—and there will be wrong doctrine, 21 envy, murder, drunkenness, wild parties, and all that sort of thing. The Message

19-21 It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on.

This isn’t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God’s kingdom.

21 They want what other people have. They even kill. They drink too much strong drink. They like to take part in loud drinking and dancing. They do other things like these. I have told you before and I tell you again. Those who do these things will not be in the kingdom of God.

Now that we know all these, can we say our flesh is acceptable to the LORD JESUS?

The verse featured here says, "they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God".
